La Llorona is a Medea-like ghost in the Latino community that has terrorized over 28 million believers in the U.S. alone. A popular version of the origins of the legend is that a woman drowned her children out of revenge when her lover cheated on her, and as a result she was condemned to roam the rivers of the world for eternity, crying for her kids...hence the name "La Llorona" which means "the crying woman." To this day, kids are told not go play by the rivers or lakes alone or La Llorona will get them.
