What is a Script in Development?
A script in development is a script that is at any one of the five Stages of development, with Pitch always being the first Stage and Writer's Block always being the last Stage.
For each script, only one Stage is open at any given time, making script development a step-by-step process. In developing scripts the NetStudio way, each open Stage is influenced by all previous Stages.
Who Writes the Script?
The final script is written by the Showrunner based on the winning submissions for each of the five development Stages.
How Long are the Scripts?
The scripts are all short-form - typically clocking in under 5 minutes once produced.
How Can I Participate?
Once you become a NetStudio member, you can collaborate on a script in two ways. After selecting a script, you can submit an idea for the script's current, "open" Stage, and/or review and rate submissions for the current, open Stage.
How Can I Become A Member?
Becoming a NetStudio member is free and easy. All you need is a valid email account, then click on Join Now and fill out the member profile.
What is a Showrunner?
Each script has a Showrunner. The Showrunner is the person responsible for guiding members through the collaborative development of a script, as well as writing the final draft of the script.
The Showrunner selects the script genre and decides how much time to allot for each Stage of script development.
The Showrunner also reviews the highest rated submissions for each Stage once the Stage is closed and makes the final decision on the winning submission based on a variety of creative and production considerations.
Can I Become a Showrunner?
NetStudio's Showrunners all have extensive experience in some facet of script development or production. If you've earned your stripes as a writer, director, producer, actor, or in any other area that you believe would make you a great Showrunner, please shoot us an email with a brief biography at .
Who Comes Up with the Script Ideas?
Ideas for scripts can come from NetStudio's development team, from our Showrunners or from our members. If you'd like to submit your idea for a script, zing it our way at . Note that in submitting your idea you agree to NetStudio's Terms & Conditions.
How Do I Select a Script?
To select a script to collaborate on, click on Open Scripts. On this page, you will see a default listing of scripts by Time Remaining in the current stage. On this page, you can also sort scripts by Showrunner or Stage.
What is a Script Genre?
A script genre describes the general sensibility or type of script that is being written. At NetStudio, you can collaborate on a nice spread of genres:
| Action | Commercial | Mockumentary | Reality |
| Adventure | Drama | Movie Spoof | Romance |
| Animation | Educational | Movie Trailer | Thriller |
| Comedy | Fantasy | Musical | |
| Comic Book | Horror | Mystery |
How Long Does It Take to Complete a Script?
A script can take anywhere from 4 to 10 weeks to complete, depending on the time allocated to each Stage by the script Showrunner.
How Long Does it Take to Complete each Stage?
Each Stage can take anywhere from 4 to 14 days to complete, depending on the time allocated to the Stage by the script Showrunner.
What is a Submission?
A submission may be your pitch, story plot, character ideas, lines of dialogue, or writer's block solution, depending on what Stage the script is at in the development process.
How Can I Make a Submission?
Only members can make a submission. Once you have found a script that you would like to collaborate on, making a submission is easy. Just click on Make A Submission and let the creative juices flow.
In making a submission, keep in mind that each script has a clearly defined genre, and that only one Stage is open at any given time. Your submission should be consistent with the script genre and its current, open Stage. It will also be useful to look at the winning submissions in previous Stages so you can have an idea of where the script is headed.
How are Winning Submissions Selected?
Submissions are reviewed and rated by members with the help of NetStudio's proprietary technology, which ensures that all submissions are rated fairly and that the best ideas rise to the top.
Once a Stage is closed, the Showrunner reviews the top rated submissions and, based on a variety of creative and production considerations, selects the final winning submission for the Stage. Since script development is a collaborative process involving five Stages, there are five winning submissions per script.
What do Winning Writers Get?
Members with winning submissions are given a prize, which may be cash, and a credit as script writers for the script.
What are the Stages of Script Development?
The five Stages of script development are:
- Pitch
- Plot
- Character Development
- Dialogue
- Writer's Block
Only one Stage in a script is open at any given time, making script development a step-by-step process. An open Stage is influence by all prior Stages.
What is the Pitch Stage?
A pitch is a short, high level concept for a script. The Pitch Stage is always the first Stage in the development of a script and should be consistent with the script genre.
What is the Plot Stage?
The plot is the sequence of events that take place in the script. During the Plot Stage, you submit your story ideas based on the script Pitch.
What is the Character Development Stage?
The characters in a script are what make the story come alive. The Character Development Stage is where you submit your ideas on what the characters in the script are like...how they look, how they think, how they interact with others - you know...what makes them tick.
What is the Dialogue Stage?
Dialogue is the conversation that the characters have in the script. The Dialogue Stage is where you submit your lines of dialogue for the characters that have been developed in the script.
What is the Writer's Block Stage?
Writer's block is an obstacle that prevents someone from completing a story. The Writer's Block Stage is always the last Stage in script development and can be any obstacle identified by the Showrunner that, once resolved, will strengthen the script, giving it that final kick.
How Do I Review and Rate a Submission?
Only members can rate submissions. Once you have found a script that interests you, select "Rate Submissions" to view and rate submissions for the Stage that is currently open.
Netstudio's proprietary technology gives you one submission to view and rate at a time, which is part of how NetStudio ensures that submissions get fairly reviewed and that the best ideas rise to the top. You can only move on to rate another submission once you have rated the current submission presented to you.
You can give a submission anywhere from 1 to 5 stars. The more you like what you see, the more stars you give! After you rate a submission, NetStudio shows you how your rating compares with the submission's overall rating.
When rating a submission, you can also view top rated submissions for this script Stage.
How Can I View Top Rated Submissions?
Once you have found an open script that interests you and you are on the Rate Submissions page, you will see Current Top Rated Submissions at the bottom of the page. You can sort submissions by User Name or Date Submited.
How are Winning Reviewers Selected?
Each script has only one winning reviewer. The winning reviewer is the member who has contributed the most to reviewing and rating submissions at all Stages of a script's development. NetStudio rewards members that provide a consistent eye in contributing to the script from Pitch through Writer's Block. NetStudio's proprietary technology keeps track of each member's rating activity, including how many submissions the member rates on a given script, and automatically selects the winner once the script is completed.
What do Winning Reviewers Get?
Members with winning submissions are given a prize, which may be cash, and a credit as script writers.
Which Scripts Get Produced?
Once a script has completed development and the final script has been written, NetStudio's production team reviews the script and either gives the "green light" for production, or takes a "pass." But hold on...just because your script doesn't get produced right away doesn't mean it won't get produced in the future by NetStudio and/or one of its producing partners.
Where Can I See Completed Scripts?
Completed scripts can be viewed, along with the names of the winning writers and reviewer, on NetStudio's Completed Scripts page. You can sort Completed Scripts by Showrunner and Genre.
Where Can I See Produced Scripts?
Produced scripts can be seen on the NetStudio's Produced Scripts page, along with the names of the winning script writers and reviewer.
